Unbeknown to us the weekend we picked to visit Chicago, the huge music festival Lollapalooza was on. We got great cheap airfares to Chicago but ended up staying near the airport because accommodation in downtown Chicago was just crazy. This didn't dampen our weekend at all though. We caught the airport line train between the city and our Hotel in the morning and then again in the evening. While the trip was pretty long, it did give us time to plan our day and we had full on days in the heart of Chicago - so there wasn't any waste of time.

Chicago is a beautiful city. The architecture is breathtaking, the history and culture is mesmerising and the amount of activities available to a tourist is almost overwhelming. Chicago in the middle of summer is a bustling and very hot city to visit, we were lucky though and the heat wasn't too unbearable.

The first day we had tickets to a White Sox baseball game in the evening, so we spent much of the day exploring the city. To make the most of our time in Chicago and to also learn about the city we opted for a 2 day Hop On Hop Off bus ticket. It was definitely worth it. It took us to all the must see places - Magnificent Mile, Water Tower Place, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, the infamous bean/cloud gate, John Hancock Observatory, Theater District, Chinatown, Little Italy and much more.

We also did a river and lake cruise, which gave a great perspective of the beautiful buildings. Both the Hop On Hop Off bus and the cruise had guides who were really good and informative. Chicago's skyline and cityscape has been the backdrop of numerous movies including Batman Begins. You could totally see it while you were exploring the city, which I felt made Chicago seem that much grander.

After the cruise we made our way down to Navy Pier we were got to walk around and explore before a quick but fairly large thunderstorm took over for a couple of hours. We feared it would cancel the baseball game, but luckily it cleared up pretty quickly. We really enjoyed the atmosphere at the White Sox game. Not to mention all the food vendor options

The next day we took the other Hop On Hop Off circuits and visited Little Italy, Chinatown, Greektown and saw the site of the beginning of the Great Chicago Fire. We also made sure we ate the local delicacy, deep dish pizza. It is pretty much a pizza pie, with a lot of cheese. While we enjoyed it at the time, we did pay for it after, that much cheese cannot be good for anybody.

We ended the evening and our time in Chicago with a visit up to the observatory floor, Sky Deck in the Sears Tower.
