Poznan

Poznan was our first stop on our whirlwind journey back to the UK. We had originally planned to spend far more time in Poland and go on to the Czech Republic before returning to the UK. However, after hearing about the death of a close friend, we revised our plans so that we would be back in the UK in time for his funeral on Saturday 1st September.
We reached Poznan around 15:00 - much earlier than we had expected - and eventually found a suitable parking space for Tallulah not far from the historic centre. We had been impressed by the plaster artwork on on the the buildings in the squares in Warsaw, but they paled into insignificance compared to some of the superb walls in Poznan "old" town. With a fountain in each corner and impressive town hall at the centre, the place was every bit picture postcard - the guy offering horse and cart rides around the square was doing a roaring trade. Poznan had been an important trading centre, it had made money and it showed. Because of problems with our parking meter (we put sufficient coins in for 2.5 hours, according to the tariff on the meter, but it only gave us 1.25 hours on the ticket!!) and the desire to crack on whilst it was still light, we set off straight after finishing our meal in the square and didn't get to fully explore the place. Unfortunately, being so far from a major airport, it is unlikely we will get back there, but we are very pleased that this is one of the places we did manage to see on our journey. If in the vicinity again we would stop for a few days.
Having arrived in Poznan earlier than expected, and left again earlier than expected, we drove on towards the border. We were surprised by the number of road-side shops selling garden ornaments as we approached Germany. We opted to stay at Hotel Nevada, correctly thinking that a hotel in Poland would be cheaper than Germany. Alas we were seduced by the sign that said Internet.
