So why have I called this a day of firsts? Well, it was our first ever helicopter ride, first times standing on a glacier, first walk, overnight camp and spa in a rainforest. That is quite a lot of new experiences for one day!(PICTURES TO FOLLOW WHEN WE FIND A SUITABLE PC TO UPLOAD THEM ONTO)
One of the reasons for deciding to stop at Franz was because there was a campsite in the rainforest, which sounded amazing. Even better, it was on the same street as a new spa bath complex, containing a series of outdoor thermal pools filled with heated glacier water - an experience we didn't think we could miss. We probably should have called ahead to reserve a spot, as we realised when we got to Franz that we weren't the only people to think that staying overnight in the rainforest was a cool idea. However we were lucky and we managed to squeeze into a suitable spot for the night. After having a quick look around we headed straight for the spa, where we splurged on a private pool for the best part of an hour. It could be argued that in many respects the spa was not dissimilar to other outdoor spa baths, but I don't know of any others that have been so sympathetically blended into their surroundings or where you can sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the rainforest whilst having a relaxing soak. We just wish we had taken the camera with us. After a meal and sharing several cocktails with the locals it was time to make our way home for the evening through the trees and ferns.
