What a difference a tail wind makes! We did the 186 kms at an average of over 28 kms/hour, which is good taking into consideration the mixed ability of the riders in the team. We left Southern Cross at 7.15 am and arrived in Coolgardie at about 4 pm. This included a stop for morning tea and lunch, plus a 'pit stop' about every 25 kms.

The discussion topic of the day was our experience at the Palace Hotel last night. We were invited, along with some other guests, to view the proprietor's coin collection after dinner. Stan (a Russian) offered a couple of coins to our leader "lucky" Jim to auction at the end of our ride if we would come and have a look at his collection and listen to his spiel. We were concerned about the time - with the early start for the big ride today we needed to get to bed early - so Jim reinforced it needed to be quick. Well, after letting us have a look at his collection (which wasn't too bad), Stan went on and on. And not only that, he wouldn't speed the talk up or let us go (he had closed the door so we felt trapped!) - everytime we looked dis-interested, or about to go, he would say "Walk with me madam - it will only take five moments". In the end, Jim stood by the door, and let us out one by one!!

The countryside we rode through changed from the green wheat paddocks to scrub dispersed with smallish trees and red dirt - we were entering the goldfields.

Marcus had some trouble with the cranks on his bike - we had to make a pit stop for the assembled mechanics to have a look, pull to bits and re-assemble - it seemed to work, so off we went again.

Although it was a long ride, everyone felt pretty good and pleased with the speed we went at. There was still a fair amount of traffic on the road, with lots of caravans and road trains - thanks to Richard and Eric in our support vehicles, they kept us informed with the two way and the "beeps".

The Coolgardie Gospel Church put on a very nice evening meal for us and were friendly and hospitable. We were all pretty pooped and headed off to bed about 8.30 pm in the Church building.
