Where I stayed

We spent the last three days either at the beach or at the pool, relaxing in perfect weather in the strange and wonderful Sozopol. The beaches were crammed with surprisingly quiet and well- behaved Bulgarian tourists and an abnormally high number of women who had no business walking around topless wearing thong bikinis.  Nonetheless the environment made for excellent people watching as we whiled away our days soaking up the sun without the pressure of travel and the stresses of the Far East.

Each morning we would have a jelly filled crepe from a street vendor and dream of Stumptown Coffee as we labored our way through bad cappuccinos.  I've yet to find better coffee than Seattle, but I do enjoy trying the various coffee customs around the globe.  In Bulgaria’s case, it seems placing a coffee vending machine on a residential sidewalk is perfectly normal and a necessity for those unwilling to walk an extra two blocks to a café.

In our few days in Sozopol, Erica was able to see the light and agree to spend a few more days relaxing with the carrot of a wreck dive scheduled before our departure to Sophia.  We had to change hotels, but lucked out with a cheaper room in a slightly better location.  Despite the lazy days, we did manage to explore a bit and check out the old town, which had a surprisingly ancient history as a port and an equally surprising charm despite the tacky t-shirts, beach merchandise, and women walking around in short skirts, high heels and baby strollers at 11pm.  If Bulgaria is any indication of the availability of eastern European brides anxious to snare an American husband I can only imagine what the Ukraine is like.
