I've just realised that this is my third year running going to Bangkok (last year when I went to Cambodia, I arrived in December 2006 and left in January 2007, so I'm counting that as three years). Seeing as Bangkok is not my favourite place in Asia, to state it mildly, it was with much trepidation that I returned, and I'd vowed to stay in the city as litte as possible. But seeing as how Bangkok is such a convenient springplank to surrounding countries Myanmar, Laos and cambodia, there's just no escaping.

First thing I did right this time was NOT to stay on Kao San Road (KSR). I'm sorry to say but KSR embodies everything which I abhor in mass backpackertourism. Mass normal tourism is bad enough, with sunburned barechested Brits (unfortunately only the males) wandering around temples in shorts, and Dutch couples rowing about the price of a cup of coffee at the loca cafe. The term "backpacker" on KSR loosely translates to any badly dressed, unshaven (that unfortunately does include the females) "youth" (between the age of 16 to 80) shuffling through the street in search of cheap accommodation, cheap food, cheap t-shirts, cheap internet, cheap laundry facilities and cheap beer (but check out the beer girls in the evening, they're gorgeous!).

So this time, I'm staying well away from KSR, but in Silom at a nice little boutique hotel called La Residence. You pay a bit more, but for the short time I'll be spending in Bangkok, it's definitely worth it. Another three benefits are that the hotel is close to huge Lumphini Park, which is great for jogging, close to the Myanmar Embassy, which is great for getting my visa sorted out and close to Pat Pang, one of Bangkok's "entertainment districts" which is great for ... staying well away from (honest, Mum!).
