First impressions of the island, is of very much a tourist island, the little town built on the isthmus of sand bar has swamped the original Muslim fishing village and it was this area that most badly effected by the 2004 tsunami, but things have largely now been rebuilt. The town is packed with little hotels, mine is very comfortable, restaurants, lively bars, loads of tour booths and dive shops and Thai massage joints. Every few seconds walking around the little paths in the town, only bicycles allowed here!, I will hear "massaaaaaage sir" some adding "happy finish" a couple of times !
On my first day I wanted to get a good perspective of the island so I set off to the view point in the center of the island. The strenuous climb was rewarded with spectacular vistas over the island. Steep sea cliffs, green palms and amazingly clear seas. After a rest at the top I decided to descend on the Eastern side of the island to one of the more quieter bays, Rantee Bay. The path was very steep through the dense forest and I got eaten alive while doing it !. Rantee bay was really lovely, great setting, a couple of beach bars and a very quiet white sand beach. The sea was probably the clearest waters I have ever swam in and so warm.
After a few hrs down on the beach and enjoying a few Changs in the beach bar I took the longboat taxi back to the town which was a great trip round the headland.
Probably one of the most spectacular islands I have ever visited and one I'm looking forward to exploring more, I have 5 days booked here.
Oh and I have noticed I have now had over 1,000 views of this blog since I started, so thanks to you all for reading my ramblings
