Left Cat Ba island yesterday on the 14.30 hydrofoil to HiaPhong and had a few hours to kill there in a cafe listening to the new Jethro Tull Aqualung remix, very nice indeed :-).
Had a short flight down to Da Nang from Hiaphong and then a taxi ride into my hotel in Hoi An to arrive around 11 pm.
Have spend the morning walking around the old town here in Hoi An and it's a really lovely place, very historical and largely unspoilt if you discount just how many tourists are here overrunning this small town. The other thing that detracts is the consent hard sell from the locals - most common words I hear are "HELLO", "where are you from?", "where are you going now?", "Motorbike !", "look in my shop" - It all gets quiet tedious after a while, but I have managed to stay in control so far and not swore at the locals yet !, something I couldn't stop back in Beijing last year
This has been an important trading port since the 16 C and designated a UNESCO world heritage site it has a charming location on the banks of the river Thu Bon and has some outstanding old houses in Chinese & Japanese style. If you discount the locals, the place has a very laid back feel to it with some lovely restaurants and cafes lining the river and some lovely old building architecture.
The afternoon was spend with a lovely cycle down to the nearby Cua Dai Beach which is a lovely stretch of white sand.
Gonna rent a scooter tomorrow probably and travel up the coat to Da Nang and beyond, it is supposed to be a really spectacular stretch of coat line.
