Today`s tour on the way to Cancun was a visit to Chichen Itza. Our guide was very charasmatic and the weather was very hot and humid - quite a change from other parts of the country. This is apparently one of the only original sites featuring a blend of Mayan and Toltec civilisations. There are some unique statues including my personal favourite Chac-mool, or the reclining man. They also practised a ceremonial game like handball or hacky-sack in which the captain of the winning team would be decapitated...... There was a similar `game`in Monte Alban but this is the only site showing carvings of the ceremonial clothes and a fully- functioning `court`with stone hoops - fascinating.

The main temple itself is very impressive and fully restored on two sides. The accoustics are incredible when clapping hands from the sides. The stones vibrate with a metallic sound!

On the site there is also a large deep natural sink-hole where human offerings were made. Although many of these holes were used for drinking water this one was purely ceremonial.

After the visit we took taxis up the road to have lunch near one of the other sink holes and some of us got to have a swim. It was a great way to top off a hot day. Good food and a cool swim....

Another bus ride to Cancun and we were settled in for the night.
