I promised myself I'd never come back here. The war. The bombs. The blood. The screams. God the screams. I can still hear them. We just made it out in time when Siagon fell back in '75. You see life in a different way when you scrape bits of your best friend off you. I still see him in my nightmares. We were just kids God damn it!!

And I thought Bangkok was mental. Hanoi is crazy town. To cross the road here you have to walk out into oncoming traffic. Seriously. It's either that or don't go anywhere. There's 80 million people in Vietnam and I think 79 million of them have tried to run me over.

It didn't start well here. I made a total balls up at the airport and instead of lifting 300000 Vietnamese Dong out, I lifted 3000000. An easy enough mistake to make, but what I did next was just plain stupid. I was so busy worrying about how much I'd just lifted out by mistake, I forgot about my credit card, and the ATM swallowed it again. So now I'm down to one credit card to live off for the rest of my trip, and I don't know how much is on it or what my limit is.

Anyway, no point in worrying, I'll deal with that problem when it comes. I'm ripped off as usual getting a ride from the airport to town. I've no where to stay yet, although my lonely planet recommends a few places, so I head to one of those.

It's full. Obviously.

But never worry! The hotels "sister hotel" is just around the corner, and the lovely receptionist can give me directions. This was my first real taste of Hanoi, and it was scary. There are mopeds everywhere, most of them trying to get you on the back to give you a lift somewhere. I make it to the other hotel (which was a miracle) but they only have double rooms left. Too tired to go back out into the madness of Hanois streets I agree to get ripped off again.
