Rotorua is the only town you can smell before you see. New Zealand lies on a fault line between the Australia and Pacific tectonic plates, so the entire country is pretty much a giant volcanic mountain range. In Rotorua though, there are hot thermal springs, which are great for spas and mud baths (which we of course tried out) but the entire town smells of suplhur. If you'd like to know what that smells like, leave an egg for 6 months, then crack it open and take a nice deep breath. :-) The other thing thats unique to Rotorua is Zorbing. If you've never heard of this, don't worry, not many people have. My friend Maria back in Sydney told me about this, and I thought she was joking. Basically they put you in a giant plastic ball with some water and push you down a hill. No, seriously. Rememeber, the Kiwis invented Bungi jumping. It was AMAZING. :-D Slooshing about inside, not knowing which
way is up or down and pissing myself laughing. It was honestly one of the funnest times I've had whilst on my own in a big round ball. (http://www.zorb.co.nz ) That night we went to a traditional Maori feast which kicked arse. If you think the haka is scary, you want to see their welcome dance of peace! This is also the point in the story that we introduce Dee & Dan, an english couple from 'Saaff Landan'. Or there abouts anway. Dan is actually from Portsmouth but wishes he was a cockney.
