San Francisco is a city that I've always wanted to see.  Now I'm here I'm kinda disappointed, and I'm not even sure why.  Maybe it's not having anyone one to share it with takes the pleasue out of it.  Like drinking alone.  Or pushing an old woman down a flight of stairs.

It is a nice city, but the hostel (yes, I finally found a hostel! First one I've seen since Denver 1000 miles away!) is in a really strange part of town.   It's sort of on the cusp of the Red Light District, Chinatown, little Mexico and a really fancy upper class area thats in loads of movies.  So I've got a fantastic view of the city, the beautiful smells of chinese food and a pimp standing outside my window.  Seriously, that pimp comment wasn't even a joke, I can see him from here.

I was up early this morning and went to one of the worlds most famous prisons- Alcatraz.  Now this was another thing that had the potential to be disappointing, but I really enjoyed it.  The audio tour was excellent, taking me round every part of the prison and telling stories of riots and escape attempts.  This day was actually pretty special because one of the five remaining Alcatraz prisoners alive today was signing his book in the gift shop.  I went up and spoke to convicted bank robber Darwin E. Coon, and tried to make conversation, but to be honest, he was a bit of a grumpy bastard.  I thought it just  proved that a violent arsehole just grows into an old grumpy arsehole, but then a woman came up after me and he was all smiles and chit-chat!  He obviously knew I wasn't able to afford his $23.99 book, so didn't put the effort into being poilte.

They should've hanged him back in the fifties.
