Now I get to do all the tourist things I couldn't do the last time I was here, like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. :) On my first night here I went up to the top of the Rockefeller Center for a spectacular view of Manhattan. The city was lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree, and I snapped some great photos.
I got up early the next morning and the first thing I did was to visit Ground Zero. It's a very strange place, really just an enormous construction site, but to think back about that day as I was standing there was actually quite difficult. I guess it must've hit me harder than I thought. There are memorials everywhere of course, especially to the 300 Firemen that died, but there's just something weird about the actual site.
After that stroll down memory lane, I walked on down to Battery Park to see the big girl herself. I never even got to see the Statue of Liberty from a distance the last time I was here, so to get up close and personal was really cool. You still can't actually go into the statue, for some reason the US government thinks that would just result in some sort X-men terrorist attack, but I was able to get the Ferry over to Liberty Island and walk around. She certainly is in my top 10 favourtie giant french women. Maybe even top 5.
On the way back to Manhattan I stopped off at Ellis Island, the famous immigration port of America, where millions of people started their new life, including Robert DeNiro in the Godfather part II. After that I walked up to see the Brooklen Bridge, talked in a funny accent for a while, then went to Times Square. That was all the tourist stuff out of the way, tomorrow it's onto more intellectual things, such as the Metroplitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Muesuem of Natural History and the building that was in Ghostbusters.
