Time to leave Rio, so Markus was coming at 8:45 to return our deposit and say goodbye, so then the Amazing race started - - - We had to go one block to catch the bus that was going to the bus depot as it has a place for luggage, and Sundays there is no schedule, so we get there and 2 min later the bus arrives, so now if we can get there on time we can catch the 9:30 bus to Sao Paulo, but it will be tight. sundays the traffic is less, so we might have a chance, get to the bus station at 9:24 and find a line for the bus, but 4 women are ahead of us and it looks slow, so Gar shows the guy the bus and time we want, and he points upstairs, so I stay with the luggage and Gar goes for tickets, get them and out the door we go and the bus is still there, so on we get and it leaves immediately - - - great scenery and roads, so we have a 6 hour bus ride with a half hour stop. Arrive in Sao Paulo and do some walking in the building and get to the Metro line, Gar had downloaded the metro station on the iphone, get to our stop get on and 20 min later we arrive at our destination, wallk half a block and we are at our hotel, so the Amazing racer got us from apt in Rio to hotel in Sao Paulo in 7 hours and 6 of those were on a bus
Mon. June 21
We are near Paulista ave. the main business area, so we walked there and found the info and she was really helpful. Right in the middle of it all is a forested area, like the jungle, just beautiful and peaceful. Then we took the metro and went to Centro and oh my god, way more people than we ever expected, they have a big market place and people buy their goods there to sell in their stores, and the Mercado sold veg, fruit, and all that stuff, and lots of small eateries, so we picked one that the most locals were at, and of course it was good.
walked around the streets and sometimes just followed the locals and found interesting things to look at. Some entertainment on the street and a couple of churches, that people just come and go whenever they please.
back to hotel on the metro, and it is really underground, as the one time I counted 3 long escalators to get to it, it is giant and lots of people but very modern and safe, always lots of security, that just seems to be a way of life here.
Yesterday the sky was clear, today there is some pollution, but still sunny.
Tues. June 22
The view from our hotel window is great. This time we have a treed park below us with traffic on either side, and then hundreds of high rises, at night it is very nice.
Today we will go downtown to the bank that has an outlook over the city, and to a park with walkways and buildings to tour, the famous Brahms bar and restuarant and maybe a museum, then call it a day as tomorrow we leave at 8pm, but will have to be at the airport early for international flight.
This has been a real fun adventure, we find that people are people all over the world. Garry and I have had 60 days together with pretty much 24 hour surveillance, and we would not have it any other way. Looking forward to getting home, but also wondering where we will go next.
