Portland to Seaside
Checked out around 9.30am or so and drove over to OMSI to take a tour
of the most recently decommissioned former Cold War submarine docked
at the site. It was the last non-nuclear ('Noo-killer') sub the US
produced and ran on diesel-electric. Steve, our guide for the trip and
a former employee of the Tillamook Air Museum for which he wangled me
a $1 off coupon, did a decent job of trying to convince the obese
family (who were on the same tour as me) that they wouldn't get stuck
in the confined spaces. He explained that the light were red to reduce
the risk of night-time exposure via the periscope and encouraged us to
see just how much room you got to sleep in on the bunks. The answer is
not much. Quite interesting really and probably one of the better $5 I
spent in the city. Drove Northwest to Seaside during which time the
sky started to show what local rain was realy all about. Without being
able to see the road in front of me, or even the yellow lines down the
middle of it, the best tactic was to keep aiming towards the red
lights of the guy in front and hope nothing stepped or drove in
between. Arrived at the Seaside HI hostel. Hostel is a generous word -
more like a shack. Still it was ok I suppose. I asked of I was the
only person staying there. "No, there's a guy living in his van too."
the staff seemed friendly and completely unnecessary. I counted 5. But
the funny thing was not (just) that they were all comically retarded,
but that they al hated each other and kept bitching about each other
behind their backs. Found some chicken and mash at a diner where the
cook was getting a rollocking for forgetting about a telephoned pizza
order made an hour and a half earlier before heading back through the
rain for an early night.
