. We cruised through the 11 mile scenic drive which was well worth it and stopped at 'The Trees of Mystery'. Aside from the tacky Disney voice animations along the way it was definitely worth a visit. The sky rail gondola through the Redwoods canopy and the Native American Museum were well worth a look. We stopped off at Klamath River overlook, a spectacular view point and great place for whale spotting (though none sighted on our trip so far). We continued on to Gold Bluffs Beach where we walked to Fern Canyon. The 60ft fern covered sheer rock walls were in Jurassic Park 2, well worth getting my trekkies muddied for. We had a few moments reminiscent of Barry Crump, Gareth hooning through creeks forgetting that the KIA is far from a 4x4 (not sure if that rattling noise was there before ;-). We then gunned it to Arcata, it's been a long day in the car.
We decided to hole up in Gold Beach for a couple of days to get some much needed washing done and spend a day updating our blog so Gareth could have a break from driving. Again the beach stretched for miles but was cold and with black sand although sea lion spotting was a highlight. We had been told that the Golden Bookshop in town had an internet cafe set up so we headed down the beach into town. By the time we got to the bookshop we were soaked, well I was. Gareth went the boy route climbing over streams and logs and I back tracked up the beach to find a well trodden beach track up to the main street (who knew the boy track was much shorter). You can imagine I was well impressed to find there were no computer terminals but in the end the coffee was well worth the trek. The barrister must have taken pity on my sodden state as he super-sized my coffee for free. Got even more drenched on the way back to the hotel, so much so they receptionist assumed we had been out on one of the jet boat tours. We went out for dinner at the recommended Spinners. This is THE local romantic place to take a date you want to impress we mused sitting in our jeans enjoying Corona's and cheeseburgers ;-) After a final cold walk along the beach we hit the road heading to the 'Trees of Mystery' only to have to turn back as we needed gas (navigator is crap I admit but the drivers not doing much better, check the fuel gage would you ;-)
