The au pair experience in Paris has been tough, and I've been lucky enough to have new (albeit somewhat scary) experiences on venturing into Pairs to explore. Some attempts have failed, but that's life and wherever you go, whatever you do, failing is part of the experience. In my opinion, it is only when you first fail and pick yourself up, that the experience is truly enriching. Paris is honestly a marvelous city. It has so many different things to offer, from food to fashion, dancing to art, and of course the incredible architectural displays throughout the city.
What has been my favorite part of my time in Paris, one may ask? Well, it is one of my most simple experiences, yet the most powerful. On a clear day, take the RER line from La Defense to St Nom La Breteche, and marvel at, what is quite possibly, the best view you can get of Paris. Check out Montmartre sprouting out of the earth like a giant molehill in the middle of the city. Glimpse at the glitzy buildings of La Defense, and of course you can't miss the Eiffel tower. As you speed along on the train, watching the city move past, it somehow creates a magical and sensational atmosphere of glamour, beauty, and disorder all rolled into one.
The people of Paris, I have found, are not overly friendly or helpful, and will generally do the bare minimum to help you and stop there. Is this because of their busy day-to-day city lives? Perhaps. But make sure you have a sturdy pair of walking shoes, and a guide book clasped in your hand, and you shall be fine!
