We are now back in Kathmandu after an incredible 4 days our in rural Nepal getting a real taste of Nepali village life. We started out our experience by taking the public bus with Ratna to a town called rani paua, about 1.5 hrs from kathmandu, bouncinga round the old, rickidy bus all while listening to blasting Hindi music and car horns. We drove away from kathmandu and up into Nepal's green farmed hills, spotted with tiny villages and homes, one of those little spots deep down in the vally would be our home. After a heardy lunch of Nepali Dahl baht and Chiya (Chai), we began the 2 hour hike comepletely down into the vally and to the tiny little village of Balami Gau.
We spent our days in Balaim Gau living with Krishnakumar's entire family, about 20 of 'em total in a small thached house surrounded by chickens, goats and water buffalo. I got to catch up with everybody, it had been 4 years since i saw or heard from them last. Santa, by host-brother who was 14 when i was there last, is now 18, married and with a little 10-month-old baby. Unfortunatly he himself was not there as he is now working in India. Everybody else is also doing very well and we all enjoyed hainging out with my big, engaging Nepali host family. We hiked down to the river with a bunch of local kids and had a blast swiming in the refreshing water.
After Balami gau we traveled to ratha's village about 2 hrs away and got to hand out with his family for a night before hiking up the exhausting trail to Rani paua and taking the bus back to kathmandu.
We will be here in ktm for the next few days, meeting with tibetan groups and hanging out until heading back to Tibet on the 29th. We are currently recovering from all the Dahl baht, they dont eat anything else in rural nepal and we've had enough rice for a lifetime.
Kev, Clayton and I made some sweet khukuri purchases today and cant stop chopping things - bananas, mangos, cardboard- with our new - actually really old - knives.
KAILASH awaits!
