The Subcontinent
Entry 14 of 33 | show all | print this entry |
we have arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal. After traveling for weeks overland from Beijing, through Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Sichuan and all over Tibet we have finally crossed the border into really a new world. Nepal is a completely different land from Tibet and China and here just about everything screams subcontinent, the smell of curry and dhal, sweet chai, humidity, fruits, Hindu inscents, street chaos and bright saris flood Kathmandu's streets and alleyways. Today we met our contact here Yadu, an awesome guy with an incredible contageous laugh, had a great Nepali lunch of dhal baat - what else - and walked around Kathmandu's Durbar Square and side streets just observing this new environment.
Tomorrow we shall visit the Pashupatinath temple, the major hindu temple in Kathmandu dedicated to the god Shiva, and then to Boudhanath and Swayambunath, two stupas decorated by the ever watchful and wise eyes of the Buddha.
All's great here in Nepal and we'll be in KTM for the next 3 days then to rural villages in the Nuwakot district and finally to Bhatkapur, Dhulikhel and maybe some bungee jumping?
We'll re-enter Tibet on the 29th.
