Sam: What a christmas this has been! So on christmas eve we got picked up from our hotel along with others and driven 3 hours away to the amazingly beautiful Halong bay. Got on the boat and we sailed around islands, explored caves, kayaked to other nearby islands swamin the clear ocean. It looked like something straight out of lord of the rings, the most beautiful place i have ever seen. That night we had a party on the boat that went on until the very early hours. There were some very interesting people on the boat and it was a memorable experience seeing in christmas with complete strangers but who were all equally merry. The next day we sailed to the Cat ba island, part of Halong bay but a further sail away. Basically Halong Bay is huge, there are hundreds of massive rock formations and island that the vietnamise have made into resorts surronded by the pacific ocean. Well thats how i understand it! After sailing around Cat ba island we arrived at the monkey island where we would stay and entertain ourselves for christmas day. The monkey island was beautiful but basic, no power or hot water. And we stayed in a hut made out of bamboo. We chilled out for most of the day drinking cocktails in hammocks and exploring the island. We came across a wild monkey who let us get so near to him we could touch him, we had a bottle of water on us and we were feeding him the water out of the bottle. He was drinking it like a baby with a bottle. So so so incredibly to be so close. A really unforgettable experience. We next decided to go kayaking to the next island. Started of well, laughing that toad boy couldn't fit into the lifejacket. Halfway there our boat started filling with water and we capsized. Hilarious as we could see the shore. Giles pulled the boat along with me sitting in it. The sea was full of rocks and coral as sharp as a knife so he took a while to get to shore. Once on the next island we explored a bit but it was getting dark so we decided to make our way back. Got half way when we realised our kayak was completely broken. It kept filling up with water and capsizing. This time it wasn't so hilarious as we were in the middle of the ocean and the current was strong. Giles stayed with the capsized kayak while i swam as hard as i could to get help. I was getting swept along and i tried my hardest not to think about the creatures that inhabit the ocean. Managed to scrammble to a rock and completely cut up my feet and hands. Thank god someone heard my cries for help, and help came. All very dramatic. In the water we broke our camera (the memory card is ok) lost sunglasses, and Giles watch. After a few drinks we were calmer then only to have rats scrambling in our hut at night. Horrible. I convinced myself they couldn't climb onto the bed! Next day we were back in Hanoi, and checked into the most expensive hotel we could find. Had a lovely luxury night. Chilled out today, brought a new camera. Now we are waiting for our bus (for 28hours) to Luang pra bang, Laos. Oh what joy!

Will write soon. Lots of love Gam and Siles xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Now, THAT'S what I call a Christmas story!

Seriously, glad you're both o.k (apart from the cuts and bruises!). I'll email you my hilarious Christmas story, but it really isn't a patch on yours!! I agree with Jenny.....roll on Australia! Aunty Sue is getting a tiny bit stressed with all these 'adventures' you're having! xx
