Today we are heading for Namibia's biggest park...Etosha National Park. It is suppose to be great for game viewing because the area is very dry and the animals tend to accumulate around several watering holes. Unfortunatly for us it has rained a lot lately which means there will be more water available for the animals outside of the normal watering holes. We arrived in Etosha in the early afternoon and did a short game drive into the park. Our campsite is in the park and part of a very nice resort....complete with 3 swimming pools, shops, and a post office. It also has one of the park watering hole about a 40 second walk from our camp. We fixed lunch and then had some free time before dinner. I chose to hang out at the watering hole. Its very quiet and relaxing. The resort set up benches under a tree lined walkway. The only thing that came to the watering hole was a wildabeast but it was still a nice afternoon. A bunch of us went back to the watering hole to watch the sunset...amazing!
The next morning we got up very early to do a game drive. We didn't have much luck this morning. We saw some jackels, few types of antelope, and lots of birds but none of the big 5. We headed back to the campsite for lunch and to take a break. Most of us decided to enjoy the pool and warm weather. At 4 pm we headed back out for another game drive in another part of the park. There were a lot more animals but still didn't see any of the big 5. I have been very lucky with all my game drives until now...so I don't feel so bad about one bad day.
Tonight we had lamb on the spit and salad. It was close to sunset so we all loaded up our plates and took them down to the watering hole. A great dinner, a glass of wine, and a beautiful sunset...can't go wrong! Later that night a few people went down to the watering hole to hang out. Todd came running back to get everyone...a black rhino showed up and was standing right in front of the viewing area. It was very cool!
