The first allied crossing of the Rhine River into Germany itself. Operation Market Garden was a joint effort of US and British Airborne units that nearly ended in disaster. This is where I saw the first of the concrete bunkers and antitank defensive barriers (dragons' teeth) that were part of the Siegfried and Maginot Lines. Useless fortifications which had been designed and built to fight the last war with the old technologies.
