Here we are! We arrived a bit ahead of schedule yesterday, touching down at Narita a little before 3 p.m. Getting into the city was another matter, though, and it was nearly 6 o'clock when we dragged our bags into our temporary quarters. We should be getting our real apartment next week, so we'll have to live out of our suitcases for a few days more.

I'm in G's office at the moment, while he pokes around and looks in drawers, inspecting his new digs. He starts work on Tuesday, Monday being a statutory holiday in Japan; O-bon is the big summer holiday around these parts and the Japanese like to leave Tokyo and go to their families in the country, so it's not a bad time to arrive, as we'll have the city mostly to ourselves.

Air Canada's Executive Class service was muy impressive -- aside from the reclining seat with the footrest and the personal television screen, they give you socks, an eye mask, lotion, face mist, earplugs and several other little goodies Champagne!
Champagne!
. As for the food, it was really, really good. We chose the traditional Japanese meal, which included hors d'oeuvres, a tray of appetizers that was almost a meal in itself (with IKURA, if you can believe that!), a delicious salmon main course, a cheese course and finally dessert, for those who were still able to eat anything. As for drinks, we were offered champagne before we'd even settled in our seats and the stewardesses kept coming by asking if we'd like wine or a cocktail. Then there was port for the cheese course and cognac, Grand Marnier, etc. to go along with dessert.

I was perhaps a little excited about all this, so I managed to knock my glass of port over. I tried to convince G that this had nothing to do with me being drunk (I swear I wasn't!), but that I have a habit of knocking over wine glasses and I'm sure it has nothing to do with the alcohol, it's just that I don't see the stem out of the corner of my eye and when I reach for something else, bam!

I haven't seen much of Tokyo yet, apart from what I saw on the way to the airport and what we saw walking along Aoyama doori last night, looking for a place to eat. So far it's been very hot and humid, there are strange bird calls, lots of nonsensical "English" and lots of traffic.
