Our hotel room has a television, but the only Olympic things we managed to see was some water-polo (see Dave Barry's old column on that!), fencing and extremely manly women lifting weights "heavier than themselves", adds G. Because we're now in the same time zone as Greece (we lost an hour yesterday) there was nothing going on at 11 except the day's highlights. We also watched a Romanian show we couldn't understand at all: there seemed to be 2 contestants, a dorky one wearing weird clothes and a basket on his head and a "cool" one in a shirt and jeans. They had to do strange tasks, like paint the chest of a topless woman who was wearing a carnival mask, ride an electric bull and dance to "I'm Too Sexy" with 3 scantily-clad women, after which they were judged by a panel of 5 female judges. *perplexed*
After our micul dejun (for my father, who likes the local vernacular), we walked around town a bit. It's quite a bit busier on Monday mornings than on Sunday evenings! We saw the Orthodox Cathedral which has lovely mosaics inside, and the Biserica Sf. Mihail. It's in the central square and there are the unearthed foundations of something ancient there too, from the Roman/Dacian period.
I can understand a good deal of Romanian, but it's just as frustrating as in Italy: I can understand but I'm sure that if I try speaking it I'll sound like a retard, making up Romanian-sounding Spanish as I go along.
See you in a little while! I'll be celebrating my birthday drinking sweet red Hungarian wine, looking up at a painted Romanian monastery.
