"The stunning horseride around the peaceful Arenal Lake" actually was included in the GAP deal. So on day 2 we left La Fortuna and headed for Monteverde on horseback with the whole group which was divided in two, one group for those who had experience, and the other for those without. Naturally we were in the experienced group and I was given a rather ugly grey horse with very a very fleshy pink face. The annoying Hayley girl was also in our group and whilst going uphill, she told me "oh errr if you lean forward it helps the horse out a little." Having ridden for about 3 years I did already know this, but I politely hid my anger behind a smile and a "thank you". She kept riding so close to my horse, so I had a perfect opportunity to get her back, "Hayley, um, if you pull the reigns a little to the left the horse will move to the left". Later on we went for a little gallop, which isn't usually allowed, but our stupid belize guide suggested it to the leader and the next thing we knew, we were off. I think my horse thought it was some sort of race and really went for it and nothing I could do would stop it. Initially, I was relatively calm, presuming it would have to stop at some point, but then it got faster and I got further and further away from the group and then I was riding solo at what felt like 50 mph. I was so terrified and so out of control. The leader finally caught up with my crazy ugly horse and somehow managed to stop the bugger.

In order to get to the hotel we were staying at, we all had to cough up another $10 each for "the bus ride yeah". More like for his evening out. Unfortunately I got sick and wasn't able to do the canopying the next day, but Katie filled me in with all the details and it sounded like a lot of fun.

Our stay in Quepos, was awful. The hotel "Villa Romantica" with air conditioned rooms and a delicious european breakfast, a very misleading statement. For $50 dollars a night you would think that they would at least include air conditioning, no....its an extra $7 dollars a day and breakfast is $10. The town was so dirty and it smelt like bad drains. Early the next morning the group tour ended and we headed straight for the beach with a HUGE sigh of relief. We were very lucky with weather and had a great time back at Vista Serena Hostel. We made friends with two girls from Florida who ended up giving us a lift in their nice rental car back to Alajuela, where we had booked The Clarion Hotel. Of course we got stopped by the police on the way back for "speeding" on the highway which apparently was a "school zone". We haggled and got away with only paying $10. They dropped us off near an internet point so we could get the address for The Clarion, the luxury hotel we had booked for ourselves as a treat after all the hostel staying. Well..the hotel that we had booked read as follows:
The Clarion Airport Hotel, San Jose, CA, USA. Yeah, of course, we booked the hotel in the bloody states. To then make situations even worse, no hotels in the area had space because of a Doctor's conference being held in the area. I couldn't believe it. So we stayed in a grotty B n B owned by a seedy black man who needed our email address' for "research".
Of course then there were problems at the airport with our flights and the flight was over booked so we ended up changing airlines. 6 hour wait in Mexico city, etc etc.
FINALLY we arrived in LA and I was so happy. (We stayed with my old school teacher from the states) My white clothes are actually white now and all of my clothes are soft again, I had forgotten about fabric softner completely.
So far we are having a real good time in the US and are told to "have a great day" all the time, and are given free re-fills, everything is available without sugar, the chicken is packed in separate bags in case of cross contamination, they just have everything here and are so overly smiley and nice. I love it.
Right now we are in Portland with my cousin Peter and are staying on their floating home on the river. We are being so well looked after and had an awesome boat ride yesterday on Peter's boat. Tomorrow mum is arriving, not sure if I will be able to sleep tonight, it sort of feels like christmas.
I am so very excited about the rest of our stay here in the states.
Lots of love to everyone,
PS just a birthday reminder...25th is only 10 days away.
