Well not much to update... it's been raining for the last few days and I've been fighting a cold / flu / low grade fever or something. And no, it's not an extended hangover, I've been sucking down some cold medicine and avoiding alcohol. Although last night I felt a little better so went out for a few drinks, and finally asked a guy to explain cricket. I had the chance to take a crack at the equipment and the basics of cricket one time back in Ridgecrest, but didn't get much into how a game is played- and there is a big test series (match) against India going on right now and its on everywhere. For the life of me I couldn't figure it out by watching so I asked this guy- I won't go into details other than to say I'm a fan of baseball, but even I find baseball a bit boring. However it's a wild chaotic ruckus compared to cricket! These test series last 5 days, all day each day, with 'runs' scored in the hundreds. The guy I was talking to enjoys the sport because its one where you can fall asleep as the spectator, wake up a few hours later, and not much has happened. An apt description as any.
I have read a few good books, surfed the Internet, and caught up on what's going on. If you aren't a fan of The Colbert Report, I recommend going on ComedyCentral.com and watching "National Treasure- Portrait of Stephen" Parts 1-3- absolutely hilarious as Colbert tries to give his annual portrait to the Smithsonian. My two favorite parts was his Prince bit and his comment for the laptop (and toilet :-) from Sex in the City. His portrait is actually now hanging in the National Portrait Gallery- but on the wall between the bathroom entrances! Classic.
I am staying in a hostel and although the experience has been better than the Brisbane and Surfer's Paradise places, you never know what kind of roommates you will end up with. The guy on the bunk above me (yes the rooms all have bunk beds) likes to move around at least 16 times every night and produce the loudest, longest, and most irritating sleep-preventing creeks in the metal frame that he possibly can. Then when I wake up still half asleep from sleeping in 22 minute intervals, I get to breathe about a can and a half of deodorant / body spray / smelly shit the other guy uses on himself every morning. I am not kidding you can smell our room 10 feet down the hall, and it smells like baby powder. Can't wait to get away from these people- it is enough to consider springing for my own hotel room for a couple of nights, which I may do before leaving.
I also found out I have 5 more days in Australia than I thought I did- so tomorrow I'm heading out on a trip, to be logged soon. It should be a lot of fun and I will get out of Sydney and hopefully over this nagging sickness. Until then...
