Happy New Year to everyone! I have had a great time celebrating Christmas and New Year's with Caroline in New Caledonia. It has been very hot- definitely not what I'm used to at this time of year- but it has been fun to spend Christmas day on the beach and wear shorts for the holidays.
Caroline's family and friends were welcoming and very generous to share their holidays with this wacky American who can't speak French (but didn't do too bad in understanding it). There was a large Christmas dinner of oysters, prawns, a huge lobster, foie gras (roughly translated as fatty liver but very good), and good cheer. We had a very nice Christmas, spent some time at the beach, and enjoyed the day.
I tried to go kiting- the first few days there was good wind but I was trying to find a board to rent, and then there was very little wind and some rain for a week. I finally did find a board to rent but then the wind died and I wasn't able to use it- but such is sport when it depends so much on the weather. I did go with Frank one day to watch him fly his remote control airplane, he could do all kinds of impressive tricks with it. Some other highlights: staying in a treehouse cabin, lounging around the pool, cooking sweet potatoes and lasagna, playing pool and learning that I shouldn't be ashamed of losing to Caroline, hanging out with some cooks and speaking Spanish, keeping the mosquitoes from bugging everyone else since they enjoyed me so much, going to a wedding, encores, getting lost in the woods, learning to drive carefully around Noumea, candy, playing with the cats and rescuing their victims, opening christmas stockings, and more.
New Year's was a blast. We had a very good dinner with Caroline's family, then headed to a New Year's party at a nice house on the coast. It lasted all night, a lot of fun, good music, and dancing until the sun came up- I had planned on watching the ball drop in New York but I was asleep and didn't have the energy to get up, figure what time it was on, and watch it, if it was broadcast there in the first place-
but it would have been interesting to watch that happen in the morning during daylight.
Most of the time I relaxed and just enjoyed not having to be somewhere or see the sights for a while. It was a wonderful way to spend the holidays and I want to thank Caroline and her family for welcoming me and including me in their celebrations. From the first couple of days of Christmas to the New Year and even the last day when we celebrated Frank's birthday I had a great time. 2008 will be a year of big changes for me and this was a great start!
