On the ride south towards Newcastly passed "the Rock" roadstop. Guess now I've seen the Uluru Rock (formerly Ayers Rock) so no need to take a trip out to the desert.
Goes to show the US isn't the only country with silly roadside tourist traps- although it worked, I just had to stop and take a picture. I have also seen the Giant Banana, plus other large constructions of prawns and lobster, which have become a sort of Aussie touristy road trap tradition.
Stopped briefly in Newcastle but after a walk around decided to keep going- it seemed a cool city and is in the midst of transforming from a steel industrial town to a more cultural one, but I thought there would be more to see further south.
Passed through a small pretty town called "The Entrance' since it's at a small inlet to a huge lake system- it was pretty and is known for its pelicans that you can feed from the town center.
Picked up some good info on kiting spots here and decided to continue heading south towards Botany Bay. Finally came to rest that night south of Woy Woy on the beach and the entrance to Broken Bay, just north of a park I wanted to visit the next day and Sydney. So this morning explored Ku-ring-gai Park, which was pretty but very large, and drove south over the Sydney Harbour bridge. Stopped for lunch since I was starving and ducked into this internet cafe- now it is pouring rain so decided to update this log completely while I wait for the rain to subside. So far the kiteboarding plan has been a bust and I don't see much wind in the next few days... but I have seen a lot more of the country than I would have from a hostel in the middle of Sydney or Melbourne. Hopefully I can find a spot to keep this log up to date again soon as I continue driving south of Sydney.
And the _______ can now be filled in- my nephew's name is Julian Alexander Spyridopoulos, truly a name destined for greatness. Unfortunately even I still had to copy and past the last name from my e-mail... but some day I will learn it correctly. Good choice Keri and Kim, Julian's uncle approves :)
