Great snorkeling

We finally left Savusavu on this day and headed down to a small island to the east of Fiji's main island called Makongai- it was a former leper colony (today we would probably say "leprotically-challenged") and is very isolated (likely the reason it was chosen). Since we arrived in the late afternoon and decided to leave early the next day we did not go on shore. There were a few houses visible from the anchorage area. Instead we donned the snorkeling gear and swam around, seeing a lot of even better coral and variety of fish since this was a relatively untouched area (we were the only boat there). The highlight was seeing a giant clam, which if John had not pointed it out to me I would have glanced over guessing it was a large funny shaped rock. The clam was at least 3 feet long, probably 2 feet high, with it's shell wide open towards the surface. I could have easily fit my entire forearm inside and my arm through a hold on one end (but didn't). It had some amazing color and the entire inside twitched when I swam close, it was really amazing- I had no idea clams that size existed.
We were treated to an beautiful sunset that night and after getting more rain overnight, left early the next morning.
