On the road again!
Entry 12 of 34 | show all | print this entry |
First shock of the day: a PHONECALL!! at 7am to tell me my bag was at Suvarnabhumi Airport and would be delivered to New Siam within 2 hours.
Second shock of the day: a van pulling up in the road at 9am and a bag, my bag, being unloaded!! I practically hugged the delivery guy I was so excited (much to his bemusement).
I am once again free to roam and have wasted no time in doing so. I checked out the guesthouse at 11:00, was at the GPO to mail home some unwanted stuff by midday and on a train to Ayutthaya (Thailand's former capital) by 13:00. It's bliss to be out the city and actually makiing headway!
Once this afternoon's rain stopped I've taken a brief stroll round the local market (somewhat disturbed by the numerous baskets of semi-gutted toads, live eel, and other unidentifiable 'meats' on display I've made a mental note to eat veggi during my stay!) and then hopped on a boat tour round the river-island to three of the main ruined temples. Ayutthaya ia basically an amphibious city set on a 4km wide island and is home to a large number of ruined temples that were ravaged when the Burmese captured the city in 1767. It's also the first place I've been served food that is actually spicy enough for me! I've been getting really cheesed off in Bangkok with being served curries made for 'farang'. Now this is more like it!
I only plan to stay here one day- the main sites should all be achievable on a push bike tomorrow, and am hoping to catch an overnight train on to Sukhothai tomorrow evening.. Anyone would think I have itchy feet ;)

Hi Ames,
Really glad you got your bag back! Really enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to seeing you in Aus in the not too distant future!
