Light at the end of the tunnel??
Entry 10 of 33 | show all | print this entry |
A day that started on a low with an hour of extremely frustrating phone calls to airlines and luggage offices in various countries, may just have finished with a ray of light at the end of the tunnel..
I have pounded many miles of pavement going from the post office to mail home my Nepalese guidebooks (ironically the only items that made it with me to Thailand!), to a private hospital to get replacement prescription medication, to the British Embassy (extremely empathetic but unable to help), and finally to the two airline offices for my respective flights. After 3 hours sat in the Indian Airlines office severely losing my rag with the staff there who initially once again tried to fob me off, calls have finally been placed to Jet Airways and Indian Airlines Delhi and I have been told that my bag has been located and will be flown to Bangkok on the early morning flight tomorrow, and delivered to me at my guesthouse! I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders but am trying hard not to get too excited until I actually have the bag in my possession. It would be too harsh to have my hopes crushed again at this stage!
On a positive note my wanderings today have given me a good tour of downtown Bangkok, which I have to say is a pretty crazy place- totally different to the backpacker scene at Kho San, with real shops including a Boots, Marks & Spencer & Starbucks!! I've also ridden the Skytrain and become quite a fan of motorcycle taxis which are a great and relatively inexpensive way to nip through the traffic (sorry mum!).
I was due to go and watch some Thai Boxing this evening with a girl called Rebecca who I met in Nepal and who has now arrived in Bangkok (she and I have near identical travel itineraries for the rest of the trip so I feel sure you will see her name mentioned here again over the course of the coming months..) but unfortunately haven't made it back to the guesthouse in time to rendez vous. It's been good to have a friendly face in town however and she was great with the moral support last night, lending me various toiletry items I hadn't repurchased yet on the offchance my bag turned up (I have at last been able to pluck my eyebrows which is quite exciting!), and helping me select another outfit to add to my grand collection of 1 top, 1 pair of trousers and 1 dress on which I've been subsisting these last few days.
Assuming my bag turns up tomorrow it will be time to plan my onward travel up towards Ayuthaya and Sukothai en route for the Laos border (I've collected my visas for Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia this evening so now have freedom to roam). Keeping everything crossed..!
