Frogs in the pool
Entry 56 of 57 | show all | print this entry |
After a bright, sunny and rather too early start, we caught our flight to Phuket. It was a beautiful flight as we passed over turquoise seas, verdant islands, swathes of white sand and undulating kaarst hills. After the usual haggling over taxi prices, we were taken from the airport to the bus stop. It wasn't long before the bus arrived, carrying us north along the coast to Bang Niang beach.
The area had been one of the worst hit by the tsunami. It has been cleaned up and the locals are rebuilding and recovering, though much of the land has been taken to construct large and glossy resorts. Our little bungalow was not far from the seafront. The beach was long and white and quite pleasant; we found a resort with an outside bar and enjoyed the sunset with blue martinis, watching orange lantern balloons drifting up into the sky and out to sea. After an hour or so we wandered back to our bungalow, where the deafening, rattling croaks of the frogs in the swimming pool next door drowned out the chirping cicadas and twittering geckos, and kept Rick awake half the night.
