We got to Waitomo around noon and went for a quick walk in the woods. The area is limestone and due to the central location, is prone to large amounts of water. These two facts allow the formation of lots of underground caves.
The town is a tourist attraction only, with little more than a couple hostels, a museum, some tour companies and a small corner store. We stayed at the local YHA, and I was unhappy to find that my YHA card didn't give me any discounts (as promised), and the kitchen was kind of sparse as far as cooking utensils go
Cave 1
. I can't really complain too much about the rest.I went on a quick dry tour last night of a cave and saw some glow-worms. Glow-worms aren't actually worms at all, but are in fact fly larve, or maggots. Their poop glows to attract insects which they and comsume. Their life cycle consists mostly of this stage; constantly pooping, glowing and eating. I wish my poop glowed.
This morning we all got up and some of us went black water rafting, which consisted of putting on ill-fitting, mildewy, stinky, cold, wet and worn wetsuits, funny helmets and diaper-like shorts (to protect the wetsuits, and then jumping onto an inner tube and floating around underground caves, looking at glow-worms, their poop, and stalactites and stalagmites. It was actually kind of fun, and quite amusing, though I don't see myself doing it again (I've looked at enough glowing poop for now, thank you).
The next couple days will be in Taupo. I'll take the time to update my blog, clean my clothes, my sleeping bag, my towel (that smells worse than a rotting possum carcase) and myself.
