I had a job interview this morning. I sent away a couple of resumes on the weekend and one yesterday. I had planned to send out a resume (sorry, CV) every day this week, or until I got something. I stopped yesterday. I had "dummed" down my CV in hopes of not being over-qualified for a simple 3-month job. The idea being that I keep myself busy for a couple months until the warm weather comes. I was hoping to get an office job, doing simple brainless data entry or maybe even some CAD. By yesterday I had several interested emails and even one interview (today) with a company named Beca.
The interview was 10:00 this morning. I dressed myself up in the nicest clothing a backpacker could hope to get together; Khakis and a button-down shirt. I steamed the creases off the pants in the shower and cleaned off a booze stain from the shirt. I had plenty of time ahead of me (despite the slow service at Starbucks), when I spilt coffee all over myself and burned my tongue. I was probably the only white man in Auckland wearing white pants. The coffee came out of my mouth not so much in a spit, but more of a leakey spew. All over my white pants. I was now the only white man in Auckland wearing white-and-brown pants. 10 minutes in the bathroom (toilets, damn kiwi dialect. 10 min in the toilets doesn't sound right) got most of the coffee off. I love Teflon.
The interview went great. I apologized for the lack of formal wear (business in New Zealand is conducted in suits), and it was uphill from there. I was offered a 3-month position (unofficially) in Tauranga, which is a small city on the coast. I am to be a "Geotechnical Engineer". My goal of avoiding engineering for the year failed. It is nice, however, to realize that you are "wanted internationally".
I now need a car. I stopped by the backpackers car market and didn't exactly like what I saw, so despite protests from the "staff" ("but the car that you don't like may not be here tomorrow!!") I agreed to come back at a later date when they had a better selection. So much for not buying a car. At least this way I can do some independent travel now.
