After another early start and a mini bus journey across to Padangbai on the east coast of Bali. We caught the fast boat across to Gilli Trewangan one of 3 small islands off the coast of Lombok. Louisa and Mark had spent Christmas there and thought it was the perfect place to take us to. They were quite right, it was beautiful, just what you imagine a tropical island to be. The boat was very good and efficiently run. We got hand wipes, a packed breakfast and bottle of water on our way across. When we arrived, we had to jump off the back of the boat into the sea and walk up the beach. Louisa and I left the boys to get the luggage and find a bar while we went to look for somewhere to stay. After looking at quite a few different places, we found 2 lovely beach bungalows called Coral Beach which were run by a very laid back, reggae loving family. We had air con, lovely big beds and best of all breakfast on the beach overlooking the Indian Ocean
The whole island had a feeling of peace and remoteness. There are no cars or motor bikes, the only form of transport was pony and trap or push bikes. All the local people were so lovely, everybody says hello and will stop for a chat, even if you don't want to buy anything from them. We were in paradise and so happy. There was a turtle sanctuary on the beach too, where little baby turtles are nurtured until they are big enough to be released into the sea.
The next 4 days were spent chilling out on the beach, in the bars and restaurants. We ate very well, the seafood was brilliant, one of the meals we had was at a Warung which is a stall set out in the market place where you choose your fish and it’s cooked over a little barbecue and served with rice or noodles. Delicious and so cheap. One of the days we decided to walk around the island, we had been told it would take around 3 hours so we set off on what turned out to be one of the hottest days we had. We had a very hot but very picturesque walk but I think we were all glad when we got round the deserted part and spied a bar in the distance!
It was decided, not by me of course, to go out for a 'session’ one evening and, not wanting to be a party pooper, I joined in and was soon on the vodka and oranges
Another evening, we went to the bar on the beach where we were staying and listened to the boys from Coral Beach playing and singing their beloved Reggae music, they were very good too.
I have to say, staying on Gilli Trewangan is one of the best experiences we have ever had, from the beautiful beaches, lovely food, wonderful people, it was just perfect.
