A five hour train journey to Kuopio with a raging hangover, one of lifes little pleasures... Actually not that bad once the nausea had passed, the scenery of evergreen forest and frozen lakes helped cheer me up. Finnish trains although painfully slow at each stop beat British trains no contest, where else can you get a compartment just for hay fever sufferers? Wouldn't want to clean those walls...
It snowed again last night, still stupidly excited about snow. People don't seem to understand my enthusiasm, I'm told that after one long winter that will all change..
Kuopio is centered around the main town square which hosts a market hall and there are various outside market stalls. Kuopio is also proud owner of the worlds largest smoke sauna fitting 60 people, as it says in the name the sauna is heated from the smoke from the fire rather than the fire making it a cooler experience. Unfortunately didn't get a chance to try this out but I think it'll be better in the summer anyway when the lake has thawed.
1-2km away is the PUIJO TOWER well worth a visit. The lookout tower adorning the Puijo hill, a.k.a. 'the great tower' or 'radio tower' or, as Savo people sometimes say, "the potato masher" was built in 1963. In 2004 the tower underwent renovations. The tower is 75 m (246ft) high and the observation deck is 224 m (735ft) above the Kallavesi lake and 306 m (1000ft) above sea level. There is a restaurant on the 2nd tower floor which has a rotating floor that takes you around the tower approx. once per hour sadly not faster for a whirl pool in your soup. There is cafe on the 3rd floor and up one more flight of stairs is an open air viewing platform for the best views.
Back to Helsinki tomorrow...
