The Mae Tau Mann Elephant Camp was about an hour's drive north of Chiang Mae - a beautiful spot along a river. We arrived early enough to feed the baby elephants - bananas for babies, sugar cane for older ones. Then the long-awaited elephant ride ! We went across the river, up and down steep hills, through the forest past the workers' homes. My elephant's name was Charlie and he was 35 years old.

Back at camp we watched an elephant show. They marched in a parade, played soccer, did tricks, dragged and piled up logs, and even painted a picture. After lunch by the river, we rafted down the river on a bamboo raft.

The next stop was at the Monkey Centre where we saw a demonstration of how monkeys are trained to pick coconuts from the trees. It takes two or three years for the training. The monkeys also put on a show for us.

After some relaxation time by the pool, we headed out to the old part of the city for a Thai cooking lesson at the Smart Cook Thai Cookery School. www.chiangmaismartcook.com.
Our instructor had two plates of ingredients ready for each of us and showed us how to cut, organize ingredients on plates, and then make hot-and-sour soup and Pad Thai. They were, of course, delicious as was the other dishes served for dinner. We even got certificates... Though I doubt any of us will open a restaurant anytime soon.
