Today was a travel day through the mountains to Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of northern Thailand. Otto shared more information about Buddhism before we stopped at Wat Rong Khun, a very unique temple created on his family's land by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The Wat depicts his version of Hell to Earth to Heaven. It is very controversial, the opposite of Buddha's belief that the natural way is best.

We passed rice fields, dry rice fields, forests, national parks, small towns, arriving in Chiang Mai early afternoon. Lunch was at a Thai restaurant: satay, know soi, chicken cashew, tapioca pudding. Our first visit was to the Gems Gallery where Thai sapphires and rubies plus precious stones from around the world are cut, polished, and set in gold. We then visited the umbrella section of Handicraft Street where paper umbrellas are made and then painted by artists.

After checking in and sitting by the pool at Lanna Mantra Resort Hotel, we took a songtaew taxi to the Night Market for dinner and shopping at street stands.
