Day 15 - My lasting impression of Ilhabella is that it is a holiday destination for Brazilians. Nice enough, but you really need the weather and some of the language. Got up around 8.30 as intended to catch the 11.30 bus from Sao Sebastiao to Sao Paulo. But of course, the final irony of the last few days was that it was blazing sunshine, indeed would reach 33° around noon - i was travelling all day so couldnīt enjoy it.

When i got to the bus ticket office, i was told that the bus i wanted was full, so was the next one, and the one after that. I communicated by phoning Andres in the pousada; it may have been a plot to get me to pay the R$500? Anyway, the only bus available was 19.30, and i wasnīt prepared to wait 9 hours and arrive into Sao Paulo in pitch dark (journey is over 3 hours). Decided best option was to go to San Jose de Campos (?) and get to Sao Paulo / airport from there. Next bus i could get was 1pm, so a couple of hours wait after reaching the mainland.

Reached Campos around 15.45 to find that they do buses direct to the airport, ie i didnīt have to go through Sao Paulo (a city of over 20 million people - more than twice the population of the whole of Scotland and Ireland put together!!). As i had an airport hotel booked, this was fine. Actually seemed to work out for the best, but unfortunately the next bus available was 7pm! Therefore hung around the bus station for a few hours, having a couple of beers and some food and eventually getting the bus (which was half an hour late). Got stuck in pretty horrendous traffic, but got to airport at 9pm and short taxi ride to hotel. A nice steak and bottle of Malbec was required. All in all saved a good bit of money as buses were only R$25 and R$15 but travelling all day does take it out you, especially in +30°.
