Spider bites and elusive wild elephants
Entry 6 of 31 | show all | print this entry |
Monday 11th August... Finished week one at WFFT Sanctuary (www.wfft.org for anyone who wants to have a look), only 3 more weeks to go. I could really use a day off now as starting work at 6:30am every day is killing me! A few of the volunteers went on a jungle trek today but only half of us could go so I think I get to go on Thursday but one of the other girls doesn't want to go so I'll be stuck with all the boys and Edwin, the sanctuary owner. He took us all out the other night to try and find wild elephants and emerged dressed up in all his dutch military gear saying "I'll see the elephants before they see me". Anyway after much driving, stopping, waiting, and more driving and stopping we saw.......a couple of rare birds and a fig tree! Amazing. Apparently the reason we saw no elephants was because we were all being too noisy sat in the back of the truck, Nothing to do with cars zooming past, beeping, of course. Edwin just didn't want to look stupid so he blamed us, but we all found it quite funny anyway. The look of him all dressed up was enough to scare off any animals. Other news...I got 2 huge bites yesterday morning which looked a little different to the variety of mosquito bites I've acquired. After seeing a nasty email about how spider bites turn out I got a bit worried as they started to swell up really badly during the day and in the evening i could barely move my hand. Turns out they are spider bites so I went hunting round my room for spiders and squashed them all. Also bought a bottle of cheap Thai rum which seems to have eased the pain a bit but doesnt make getting up for 6:30 any easier! One of the bites is now about 6-8 inches wide and bright red - it looks really attractive. But Janine, you'll be glad to know its not got to the stage in those pictures yet, but then again its only been one day...
Will update again after I've done the jungle trek. Maybe I'll get some nice pictures of some more fig trees.
