First thing first:
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007!!!
BONNE ANNEE 2007!!!
Don't know how was yours but mine was great!
Le Nouvel An à sydney, ca déchire!
Sydney is famous for the fire works from the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge on NYE and now I understand why. This must costs the Australian a fortune! But to be fair it's definitely worth it. Let me tell you about my NYE...
As I told you above, the fire works are the main events of the NYE in Sydney. You've got one at 9.00pm, they say it for the children, it's just like the ones we have in Europe... And then the main one is at midnight (obviously), supposed to be unique, which is why the most important part of the day is to find the best spot to watch the fire works..
As I was going with Tim, my Kiwi colleague who's been living in Australia for 4 years, I said to myself, I follow Tim's plan, he knows what he's doing...
One of the best spots is Mrs Macquarie's Point, part of the Botanic Garden of Sydney, just on the right side of the Opera House facing the Harbor Bridge. They can fit 25,000 people in there. The plan is to get there as soon as possible before they actually close the doors when they rich the maximum number of people.
We got there at 12.30pm thinking that we would be nearly the first ones to arrive... big mistake!!! When we got there, there was already a queue of 3hrs to get in! Thanks to our contacts (people living at the hostel) we jumped the queue and ended up queuing for only half an hour ;-)
Another important part of the day was to manage to hide bottles of alcohol as we were not allowed to bring our own bottles in the park. Easy thing to do for us!!! We got in with a bottle of Jack Daniel's and 2 bottles of vodka hidden in an esky under the ice... ;-)
We got inside the park at 1.00pm and we had the best spot ever just by the fence next to the Opera House.
Considering that the fire works was at midnight, you can imagine that we had a lot of time to kill..
Then it was midnight and the fire works started... Just have a look at the pictures and the video, it's a tiny part of it but I'm sure you'll appreciate it, it was just amazing.
It's worth coming to Sydney for NYE just to see that once in your life!
After the fire works, we all left the park and ended up at Scary. To be honest, by this time everybody was pretty drunk, as would say one of my friends, "we were a little bit under the weather"!
That was a great night, even considering that I had to work at 7.00am the next morning! My colleague Tristan is just too sweet, he let me sleep until 8.00am before waking me up to go to work... Yeah I slept at the hostel, went to bed at 6.00am and was behind the front desk of the reception at 8.00am... That was cool ;-)
Hope you had a wonderful NYE too, wish to you all the best for 2007!
