Nice Friday July 11
After breakfast on the balcony and some searching the internet for a café we wanted to have lunch at in Nice we set off in the car. When you have found a good car park, you really hate to move the car. I kept faith in the fact that when we were previous in Antibes, Jan-Erik was always incredibly lucky in finding car parks. We spent some time getting the GPS set up, finally found the missing link in the very short manual. When looking for an address, you don't put in what kind of street, place etc you are looking for, just the name. The GPS wasn't actually much use on this trip as it hardly ever agreed with the way Jan-Erik wanted to go, or us for that matter. We have some options, fastest, shortest, time and distance (what ever that means) and if you want toll roads. What we really want is the most scenic. Traffic was very heavy, but Nice isn't far away. We parked the car down by the harbour and walked along the seafront and then into the old town. It is a lovely and interesting old town. The markets were still on and there was a lovely flower market, so many beautiful blooms. Lots and lots of wonderful fruit, but quite expensive. We sat down for a drink at midday just as a canon went off.
Enjoyed watching the people walk by, so many interesting faces. Then it was time to walk on. Jan-Erik led us through the narrow streets, Peter was finding walking much easier using the walking stick. Lots of interesting shops, beautiful clothes, often very expensive. I even saw a new kind of shop. Salt and soap, seen soap shops before but never one that sold different kind of salts. Black salt, lavender salt, rose salt, curry salt, Australian salt from the Murray river, lemon salt, paprika salt, the list is endless. Lots of stalls with spices too. Somehow the smell of spices are more appealing in the open that in the closed space of Mustafa in Singapore.
Despite the fact that the buildings were quite tall and the streets narrow, it was still quite light in the streets, the sun being so high probably helped. We where heading for Café de Turin, the oldest seafood restaurant in Nice, started around 1900. Our luck was in and we found a table for 4 outside. The restaurant is famous for their oysters, and while the rest of our party ordered oysters, I decided on prawns. I did swap one of mine for one of Peter's oysters. It was all really nice we had a bottle of Moscade with the food. After our leisurely lunch we walked back to the car, but in the opposite direction so we had done a complete circle of the old town. We used the motorways to drive back to Antibes. The boys dropped Gerda and myself off in town, so we could do some shopping, we headed for a shop that sold fresh pasta, unfortunately they were closed. According to the sing they should have been open, I suspect they have taken a long weekend, as it is Bastille Day this weekend.
So we went to the supermarket and got a roasted chicken and a few other things. Around 5pm we went down to the beach, it was totally packed, but we managed to find a space large enough for the 4 of us. The water was lovely, a little cool to get in, but really nice. Went home around 7 had dinner and then looked at photographs. We were in bed by 10pm. More thumbnails ...
