We walked the Strip last night, winding our way through several of major hotels, their casinos humming, their lights adding a surreal multicolor glow to the cloudy evening sky. Throughout last night, thunderstorms rattled our windows. Throughout today, flash flood warnings popped up on my phone.
We drove south this morning to check out a possible trail near the Hoover Dam, then drove the shoreline of Lake Mead to the Valley of Fire State Park, which turned out to be the highlight of the day
I'll try to get a video we took of the slot canyon there posted tomorrow, but even under gray and gloomy skies, the color of the stone sparkled.
We think Valley of Fire is a fitting way to introduce this trip, escaping from the man-made fantasy
world of Vegas into a geological wonderland of the Colorado Plateau - from crowds of people looking for enjoyment and pleasure in a world of plastic pyramids, fake Eiffel Towers, and other replicas of reality, to the pristine serenity and solitude of some of the most breathtakingly beautiful natural wonders on the planet.
I hope you can follow along as Pat, Denise and I make our way over the next 2 weeks through Unforgettable Utah!
