After paying our entrance fee we jumped in the back of a ute and set out into the park! The ute could only take us so far before our little legs had to do some walking! Our destination was El Cabo San Juan del Guia beach that we had heard was the most beautiful beach in the park and calm enough to swim at. We passed several other beaches which were to rough to swim at and stopping only to get out of the way of the donkeys running along the track, for photos and a jugo de pina (pineapple juice). Already I am addicted to the pineapple juice! Previously the area has been a little dodgy due to the civial war and the narcotics trade - again the FARC and other guerrilla groups fighting
Several hours later we reached our destination and it was beautiful. It was roasting hot so we had our lunch and then found our room for the next few nights!! Our room ended up being in a palapia (thatched roof open walled hut) on the top of a little hill that jutted out into the ocean. Our bed was a hammock!! Definitely one of the coolest spots I have slept. Stupidly we did not pack enough warm clothes and thought a sarong would do the job for a blanket. It did not seem too silly at the time as during the day the weather is roasting!! By about 10pm we realized we were rather wrong as the wind whipped through the hut and we froze. I slept the night with my arms inside my shirt and my sarong and very small pack towel over me! Still the noise of the waves crashing was nice to go to sleep to!! Our time at the beach was very lazy and relaxing and spent reading, swimming and lying on the beach - and yes I am officially the whitest person in Colombia!!
This afternoon we have returned to Taganga for another night before heading back to Cartagena.
