The dawning of a new day and a new adventure on the water. Where to next? The morning ritual over breakfast is listening to the local weather forecast to find out what we are in for during the day. Today we were set for a perfect day of north easterlies 10 to 15 knots. Something we found bizarre but very amusing after the weather and scheds were people advertising their restaurants (complete with chef's special and soup of the day), what the public library had on offer, what fundraisers were happening and general chit chat between the "advertisers". Quite unique and we loved it. Certainly a far cry from the weather and sched reports given in the Whitsundays!
It was decided to get off the yacht and walk over to the other side of the island. A nice little track through rainforest and we came out on top of the cliffs watching the breakers crash onshore. Very picturesque. It was good to stretch the legs a little before setting off to our lunch time stop at Fonua Fo'ou. Lepa caught a trevally for us for lunch - we were so grateful having him on board - just for the fresh fish alone but I am sure he was longing for home! I was a little too sunburnt to do any helming, so Lepa took over which was great.
This little sandy island was surrounded by coral and that typical aqua blue/green crystal clear water that you see in all the pictures of the South Pacific - really pretty. We had a walk around (but unfortunately, it must have been a breeding ground for some very upset birds!) and a snorkel over the coral before Lepa came for us and it was time for lunch. We BBQ'd the fish with some potatoes, hot bread and sliced cucumber, washed down by a glass or two of fine wine. Mid afternoon it was time to up anchor and head to the Island of Tapana and the restaurant La Paella which we were all looking forward to very much. It you haven't worked it out yet, our favourite past times apart from sailing is eating and drinking and having a great laugh.
Took us a while to get to Tapana Island as we were intent on sailing as much as possible, therefore we ending up tacking lots! It was getting quite late in the afternoon, so time for the iron sail and we motored in, showered and went to shore. Burrito (the dog) welcomed us before Maria came and settled us at our table. Being the quiet time of the year - we were the only ones there, so it kinda lacked the usual atmosphere, which I have heard is great! It was pretty warm and steamy, so our first course of chilled Gazpacho soup was absolutely divine and one of the best things I have eaten on this trip! This was followed by deep fried cheese croquets, potato tortilla and a chicken and seafood paella. The dessert was icecream and fresh papaya. Even though we were hanging out for some fresh salad stuff - which they couldn't get either, the food was just delicious.
After dinner, our hosts and their staff entertained us with the spanish guitar & marrakas, singing and dancing which was very enjoyable. We left this wonderful little restaurant very satiated, sober and extremely exhausted. More thumbnails ...
