Short half an hour flight to Kauai. Kauai is the oldest of the 8 main islands, its rugged and the scenery is absolutely amazing, nothing like we've ever seen before.

Headed to a hostel in Kapa'a. They had a return flight ticket policy (if you didn't have one you couldn't stay there). Luckily there was another hostel just down the road. A bit scruffier but alright. Stayed for a couple of nights while we organised what the hell to do on this island. We knew we wanted to hike the Na Pali coast and camp at some beach parks but other than that didn't have a clue.

So spent the day on the internet organising. The really annoying thing in Hawaii is that you can't just turn up at a camping park and camp, oh no no, that would be far too easy. Instead to make your life more difficult you have to get a permit for the specific park and the specific days you want to camp, which means detailing everything in advance. There are 2 different kinds of parks (state or county) and yep, you guessed it 2 offices generally in different buildings only in 1 town on the island. So for e.g. if you're in the north of the Kauai and decide you'd like to camp an extra night somewhere you need to get the bus (and thats 1 bus every 2 hours) down to the south to the town that has the permit issuing office before 3.30pm (it takes about 2.5hours). AND if you don't have a permit the park ranger in the state park generally will arrest you, all for the princely sum of $5 per tent per night! Its a right royal pain in the arse.

As it happened there were a few nights we stayed and didn't have permits and didn't get any hassle from any park rangers so I would say take all the permit issuing with a pinch of salt the next time.
