So we spent a week on Kauai - the island to the north of Oahu.  It's called the Garden Island cos it's so green and lush.  Big difference to Waikiki and more what you might call the 'real' Hawaii.

Our hire car for the week was a Ford Fusion - loved it.  It was absolutely huge (although one of the smallest cars around!) and smooth to drive.  The only problem is that no where in Hawaii are you allowed to drive over 55mph.  Most streets are 25, dual carraigeways are 35-45 and there is about 2 miles in the middle of nowhere where you are allowed to drive 55.  It's nuts - like driving with one hand behind your back.  It takes hours to go round the corner.   Having said that the traffic on Kauai is a lot better than Oahu so at least you get to go that speed!

We had an amazing apartment that was bigger than our house - not sure how we managed that - we deffo didn't book that!  Anyway, we weren't complaining.

First few days we great weather and we took advantage by sunbathing around the pool.  We decided to take a helicopter tour as most of the island is only accessible by air and we wanted to see the Na Pali Coast which is where a lot of Jurassic Park was filmed.  The chopper ride was amazing - one of the best experiences of my life - it's the closest thing to a jet pack that I can imagine.  Better than flying in a plane by a million miles.  It did not, however, go well for Steve.  I will let the photos tell the story but suffice to say, Steve won't be going on any more helicopter tours.

We also went river tubing which was good fun - basically floating down an irrigation channel on a rubber ring through 4 miles of tunnels.  Basically Lazy River in real life.

A storm passed through a couple of days before we left with lots of rain and fork lightening.  It continued to rain until we left and the day after we left a flash flood warning was raised for our resort area - dodged a bullet there but our habit of causing natural disasters shows no sign of abating.
