Portland has joined the likes of Agra, India; Capadocchio, Turkey and Patmos Island in the Mediterranean Sea as a "Must See" destination for world travelers.
I recommend a Friday, August 10 arrival. This will gives us all of Saturday in Portland for a full day of colorful activities before we drive north Sunday morning. Portland is not nearly as exotic as Patmos Island, but there is a lot to see and do in this clam town.
We might visit the most photographed Lighthouse in the world. Portland Headlight was commissioned by George Washington.

Perhaps we will take the ferry for a 30 minute ride to visit Peaks Island. We can rent bikes for a ride around Peaks Island.
Saturday evening we have a seafood dinner at one of the many funky fisherman's diners on the wharf. If you prefer a different style of culinary experience there are plenty of places to choose. Second only to San Francisco, Portland has more restaurants per capita than any city in the US.
Sunday morning we have breakfast at my favorite old Maine diner before we head north. Breakfast at the Q Street Diner is a delightful step back into the 1960s.
Seafood does not get any fresher than live. As we head out of town we will make a quick stop at a waterfront lobster pound to choose live lobsters and clams from today's early morning catch. We will enjoy tonight's seafood feast as we gather around our campfire in the deep wilderness of northern Maine watching the star-filled sky dance throughout the peak night of the Perseids meteor shower.
