Jericho is not far from Jerusalem.  We did this on a day trip from Jerusalem.  It has claims of being the oldest city in the world and also the lowest city in the world.  I guess now I can say that I have been to the lowest and highest cities in the world.  In April, I went to a city in Bolivia that claims to be the highest city in the world.  Jericho has some ruins and some of those ruins are the ancient Wall of Joshua.  Much of this is still being excavated and they are so badly deteriorated that it is hard to tell where the wall was.  You would have to have a good Imagination to see this old city that was here.  The Mount of Temptation is a cable car ride away from these ruins.  That is supposedly where Jesus was tempted by the Satan.  There is a sycamore tree where someone climbed up to look out for Jesus and met him when Jesus came to him. Just a short 10 minute drive from Jericho is Al-Maghtes.  This is one of the two sites where they say Jesus was baptized on the Jordan River.  It was a military zone and they recently opened it up to the public for tourism.  Since security is so tight and it is so close to a border, there are land mine signs along the road with barb wire fence.  The spot on the river is now a planked dock.  You can swim into Jordan, which is just 20 feet away, but you also may get shot if you do this.  The river is quite dirty.
