From Mt Sinai, we went to a junction and took a taxi up the Israel border called Taba. This is another Egyptian resort town on the beach that really has no city center. It is just beach resorts. We stopped In Taba to go to Pharaoh Island, which is a small island 100 Meters off the coast that has a crusader castle on it. There is a hotel that is said to organize tours to this island. We stopped at the hotel and they said the only way to get there is by private yacht. This was very expensive. We asked if we could swim there because it was so close to the coast and they said that because this is international waters that we would get shot. Pharaoh Island is a disputed territory. From the island, you can see Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel and Jordan. It has an Egyptian flag on the castle, so I’m not sure why we couldn’t go there. Our hotel was quite cheap in Taba. It included breakfast and dinner and this was the first hotel I have ever stayed in that was so close to the border. The Israel border was only 20 feet away. There was a point in history when Taba belonged to Israel. I’m not sure when it was won or given back to Egypt.
